TO THE MOON

Man oh man I love this camera.   I'm still working on getting the settings just so, which takes a bit of experimentation.  Not that I'm complaining... That's what gadgets are all about!

I tried a new trick tonight... moon photography with a tripod.   Granted, I only had one tripod, and that was for the spotting scope.  Someday I hope to think ahead far enough to get two tripods, or perhaps even a mount for the scope.  Doing photography at 20 to 60 power requires very steady hands.  I drink WAY too much coffee to have a pair of those.

One great advantage of the 950 is the pivoting lens.  I can hold the camera to my chest and still read the LCD screen when I put the lens to the scope.  The optical zoom (3x) increases the scope's power exponentially.  When I get a more solid setup, I'll see how high I can push the magnification.  Until then, I'll have to use the Nikon BSS system, as well as the NeverBob "Dang, try it again" system.

The spotting scope I used is an old Russian "Tourist-6" that I purchased at a gun show for $30.  It is a variable power (20-30x) scope with a 50mm objective lens.  Not exactly a fine optical instrument, but the camera lens seems to fit against it fairly well.

The first picture has been cropped and downsized.  The other pictures are cropped versions of the full-sized photo.

darkroom work other then cropping and downsizing the full-size photo.
